Winter Break

Today's party was lovely! Thank you Parents for sending in delicious food. Thank you for the cookies, the chocolate milk, the pizza, the kofta, the muffins, the cake, the chocolate, and the chicken nuggets.
We had enough food to share so we invited another class. Ms. Blanca's KG1 class joined our Christmas party and we had a blast snacking, making pasta bracelets, dancing, and coloring together!

For the Winter Break, I have sent home a reading log. I also sent a sheet for the children to keep track of how many books they read. The math packet is a great review of everything we have done this year so far. This packet is optional as I know many families are focusing on spending time together during the break.

We will have Parent Teacher conferences on January 15th. I ask that everyone e-mail me their time preference during the break so that I can accommodate your schedule. My e-mail is GPSMsVictoria@Gmail.com. If you do not e-mail me, I will send a schedule slip home when we return from break indicating your appointment time.

I hope everyone has a great break (and the children don't drive you crazy at home!) and if you need to contact me, please feel free to e-mail me! It has been a great first trimester and I cannot wait to see everyone next year.

Christmas Party Tomorrow!

Tomorrow will be our class Christmas party! The children will not need to pack an individual snacks as we will  eat and celebrate together around snack time. Many children are bringing in dishes and snacks to share.

If you are unable to make or purchase something in time, do not feel pressured to do so. We will have plenty of food as is! Children are also encouraged to bring in Christmas books and music to share as well.

Also, the children are permitted to come tomorrow out of uniform as it is the last day before the holidays!

Week 13 Update

This week in Language Arts, we read the book Jump into January. This book goes through each month with beautiful illustrations and relevant vocabulary. It was a good book to review the months and introduce new words such as chimney and wheelchair.

We also added the words 'come' and 'me' to our word wall. We will continue working with these words next week. We learned a new sight word song to help us remember how to spell the word 'come'. It can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jw57Jm6Pvqc

In Math, we finished Chapter Four with the concept of estimation. Next week, math will be integrated into Language Arts with graphing and use of number lines. We will continue with Chapter Five when we return from Winter Break.

In Science, we reviewed the pond habitat and focused on the prairie habitat. What animals and plants live in a prairie? Next week, we will conclude this unit by focusing on the rain forest habitat.

Many children were upset about the Christmas concert being cancelled on Thursday. It will hopefully be rescheduled shortly and I will keep everyone updated through the blog.

Have a great weekend,
Ms. Victoria

If you ordered the costume, your child will receive it on the day of the concert in school. We ask that the children wear black bottoms and a green or red shirt underneath.

If you plan on taking your child home after the concert, please fill out a change of transportation slip if they usually take the bus. This can be found in the back of the school planner (channel book).

I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Early Dismissal Tomorrow

Please be aware that the children will be dismissed early tomorrow, Tuesday, December 4th, at 1:30pm to avoid possible traffic congestion. Please make appropriate arrangements.

Week 12 Update

This week in Language Arts, we read the book Mouse Shapes throughout the week. The children reviewed their shapes and, more importantly, became aware of the fact that everything around them is made up of shapes. We did shape hunts around the classroom and played a group game to make our own mouse out of different shapes.

We reviewed our sight words last week and I will be introducing the word 'come' and 'me' next week. They will be our ninth and tenth sight words.

In Math, we continued Chapter Four: Numbers 6 to 10 and discussed number lines. We have also begun learning cardinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth, etc.) but will continue this next week so do not be alarmed if they had difficulty with Lesson 4.9 of the math homework last week.

In Science, we have begun Chapter 3: Places to Live and Grow. We started by discussing four habitats; the pond, prairie, and rain forest. We explored the pond habitat further by drawing pictures of it and the animals and plants that can be found there.

This week we will be following the Week 2 menu if you wish to purchase breakfast or lunch for your child. Please remember that chocolate and candy are prohibited food items. The children enforce this rule and will remind their friends if they see them eating non-healthy foods!
Thursday, December 6th will be the Christmas Concert.  The children have been practicing their songs and can't wait to perform them!

Have a great weekend,
Ms.Victoria

Plants are coming home today!

The children are taking their plants home today! They have been growing for about a week and the children have been observing their growth every day.

This is a good time to ask your child: What are the four things plants need to grow? (Water, sun, soil, and space)

They will continue to grow with these four things into nice, big, hardy bean plants!

Enjoy!

Week 11 Update

In Language Arts, we added the word 'to' to our word wall. With quite a few sight words on the word wall, we can play many fun games to practice them. Some of our favorites are Blast off! (the children crouch down and jump up as they read the flashcard) and Memory.

We read the book What Do Wheels Do All Day? a few times during the week. We discussed many words that describe what wheels do- push, pull, tow, pedal, work, etc. There was a lot of new and fun vocabulary for the children like roller blades and skateboard.

We had our second Show and Tell this week and the children shared their favorite stuffed animal and toys. They always look forward to bringing their things in to show their friends!

In Math, we worked on numbers 5-10 and practiced the concept of 'more than'. We are learning through games and activities. We played Pass the Potato- we sit in a circle and sing One Potato, Two Potato and every tenth person is out until there is one child left. We also paired up and practiced writing numbers on each other's backs. One child wrote a number and the other tried to guess the number.

In Science, we recorded the growth of our beans by drawing what they looked like in the bags. On Thursday, we planted beans in soil and we will compare the growth to the beans in the bags. We also reviewed our chapter on animals and plants with reading and songs.

In Social Studies, we will be learning about symbols of Egypt. We started by talking about how each country has its own flag and we colored our own Egyptian flag. The children also pointed out similarities and differences between the flag of the United States and the flag of Egypt. They both have stripes but the flag of the United States has stars and the flag of Egypt has an eagle in the middle.

In Art, we experimented with color mixing. We started with a rainbow with only three colors and, after mixing colors, finished with beautiful rainbows of many colors.

I have sent out multiple 'Family of the Month' notices this week. We are going through tissues very quickly with all the runny noses! To prevent any illness, we have been washing our hands several times a day, especially before eating. We also wipe down our tables and chairs several times a day. Thank you Parents for helping keep our classroom germ-free!

Sunday is Picture Day. Please ensure your child is in the school uniform (no P.E. clothes). 100% attendance is ideal!

Have a great weekend,
Ms.Victoria

Show and Tell Reminder

We will have another show and tell session on Wednesday. The children are very excited! Some suggestions are photographs, small toys, favorite books, and drawings. Please do not send items that are irreplaceable.

There have been many toys coming in with the children lately. This is very distracting. I ask that toys be left at home and only bought in if it is for show and tell.

I will post a reminder every time we will have show and tell in class!

Thank you Parents,
Ms.Victoria

Week 10 Update

In Language Arts, we are starting to write sentences! We discussed using colors to describe things. Looking at a picture of many colorful birds, they chose their favorite and wrote, "I like the _____ bird." They are stating to learn that a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends in a period. (They mistakenly call it a pyramid!)

We read the book MOVE! and discussed different ways animals move: they jump, swim, slither, slide, waddle, etc. We read this book several times this week and the children understood the vocabulary more and more each time.

In Math, we finished Chapter 3 with a Unit test and started Chapter 4, which focuses on the numbers 6-10. We will be focusing on how to properly write the numbers, especially the numbers 8 and 9.

In Science, we are finishing our chapter on plants by planting our own plants. The children placed beans into small plastic bags and we will be observing its growth. Eventually, the beans will be planted in soil. We planted three different beans and we made predictions on which bean we thought would grow the fastest.

In Art, we looked at the work of Kandinsky, a famous abstraction painter. We made a replica of his famous concentric circle painting. The children were encouraged to use a lot of colors and make it unique.

The children bought home their sight word books this weekend. Please review the words with your child and send the book back to school on Sunday so that we can add more words to it!

Many children have been finishing their food before lunchtime. Please make sure your child has enough food for breakfast, snack, and lunch. We will be on the Week 2 menu this week if you would like to purchase breakfast or lunch for your child.

Thursday, November 22nd, is a half day and the children will leave at 12:00.

Also, Sunday, November 25 is Picture Day. Please make sure your child is in uniform.

Have a great weekend everyone,
Ms.Victoria

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Labeled Jackets

The children take their sweaters and jackets on and off several times a day and they are often mixed up. Please write your child's name in large, clear letters in English (in permanent marker) to prevent it from getting mixed up or lost.

If the label bothers your child, you can write his/her name on the inside of the jacket.

This will prevent a lot of confusion and save time.

Thank you,
Ms.Victoria

Sight Word Practice

I can see from some of the children's work that many finished their homework for the week. If they are done, they may practice their sight words. One way to do so is playing the game memory. Please go to MatchtheMemory.com/KG2B. The children can try to find the matches and beat their time each time they play by finding them faster and faster.

Thank you Parents for your help,
Ms.Victoria

Note about Transportation Changes

Hello Parents,

An important note from the school administration was sent home today about transportation changes. It states the following:

Dear Parents,
Since we are constantly working for the welfare and safety of our students, GP School will not accept any transportation changes on half days or short days unless you notify the administration at least one day ahead.

Thank you for your cooperation,
School Administration

Week 9 Update

In Language Arts, we are working on beginning sounds. The children practiced isolating the beginning sounds of words. For example: /c/     /at/ = cat
We also added the word 'a' to our word wall. It is our sight word of the week.We worked on reading it in a sentence, finding it in books and writing the word.

We practiced our sight words playing 'Swat the Flies'!
In Math, we continued Chapter 3 Patterns. We talked about the 'pattern rule' which is the part of the pattern that repeats itself. If the pattern is yes, no, yes, no, yes, no...the pattern rule is 'yes, no'. This is not as easy as continuing a pattern as the children have to identify when the pattern starts repeating itself. We will continue this in the beginning of next week before moving on to Chapter 4.

We made colorful macaroni necklaces using patterns!
In Science, we will be planting our own plants next week so we continued learning about how plants grow and change. Specifically, we learned about different stages of a plant's life this week. They start as a seed, then turn into a sprout, then a seedling, and finally- a plant!

We had a very special treat on Thursday with our trip to see Dora! The show was very interactive and the children helped Dora find her lost teddy bear.

The girls were so excited!
Waiting patiently for the show to start.
Dora finally finds her teddy bear in the City of Lost Toys!
Thank you Parents for checking the blog regularly! It is the best way to keep informed about everything going on at school.

Just as a reminder, there is no school on Thursday November 15th in observance of the Islamic New Year.

Have a great weekend,
Ms.Victoria

November- Week 1 Homework

Hello Parents,

It was so nice meeting with all of you yesterday. If you were unable to make it, please let me know when you are available to come in for a quick progress report meeting.

Today I have sent home the homework schedule for the first week of November. We are returning to a weekly homework schedule. As a reminder, the homework reinforces what we do in school and should be done on a daily basis. I will return the math booklet on Wednesday after I have had a chance to look over their October homework.

The schedule is posted in the homework tab. If your child loses the worksheets, please write me a note in the channel book so I can replace them.

Thank you for all your help at home,
Ms.Victoria

Week 8 Update

In Language Arts, we added the sight word 'we' to our word wall. We also read a book about our 5 senses and discussed how we use each sense every day.

In Math, we started working on patterns. The children are familiar with the concept from KG1. We will be working on more complicated patterns that differ in size, color, and shapes.

Halloween was very exciting! The costumes were fun and we went trick-or-treating around the school. There were some cute costumes and silly costumes!

Sports Day was a lot of fun! We did a lot of running and playing. Most children stayed in their Sports Day clothes the whole day but thank you to all that sent uniforms.

Progress reports were sent home today in a white envelope. Please look it over and return it signed. I look forward to meeting with parents on Sunday. We can discuss any questions or concerns during conferences.  The children do not have school on Sunday.

The children visited the book fair today in school. They looked through the books and made a wish list of books they liked. If you decide you would like to buy the book, please send the exact amount of money to school with your child.

Next Thursday is our trip to see Dora the Explorer!  If your child is not attending the trip, you may have your child stay home that day as all KG teachers will be accompanying the students on the trip.

The October homework is due on Monday when the children return to school. On Monday, the children will receive their homework for the week. We will return to a weekly homework schedule as many parents expressed that it will be easier to manage.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Week 7 Update

Reading week was a lot of fun! We reached our '100 book' goal! The Dress as a Book Character Parade was nice and it was very special to wear a fun costumes to school. Buddy reading was also a success and the children enjoyed reading and being read to by the "big kids".

In Language Arts, we reviewed the last three letters in the alphabet-X, Y, and Z. We practice writing the letters and the sounds they make. We have also been practicing our sight words by reading simple sentences and finding our sight words in all the books we have been reading this week.

In Math, we are continuing to work on place prepositions. The children learned a song to help them learn the words in, on, under, over, in front, and behind. They use their hands to show each position as they sing.

In Science, we are continuing our plant unit and the students learned about the four things plants need to grow. They made mini books showing the four things- water, sunlight, soil, space- and we will use these books next week as we learn more about plants.

We will be celebrating Halloween next week by allowing the children to wear their costumes to school. If their costume is uncomfortable in any way, please send the uniform for them to change into if needed.

Please make sure your child brings his/her blue file and Arabic file to school every day.

Also, many children have been eating all of their packed food before lunch. Please assure that there is plenty of food in your child's lunchbox and that it is healthy food!

Thank you for the extra help at home this week with the reading logs and for preparing the costumes for Dress as a Book Character Day! It was a very fun week at school.

Happy Eid to all,
Ms. Victoria and Ms. Mariam

Parent Teacher Conferences

We will be holding Parent Teacher Conferences on Sunday, November 4th. I will send out appointment slips on Wednesday. They will be in your child's blue file. The appointments will be scheduled between 8:15 and 2:45 and are about 15 minutes at max. If you have a time preference, please write me a note in your child's channel book as soon as possible so that I can accommodate it. Also, if you cannot make the conference, I would appreciate a note in the channel book as well. It will help me plan for the day.

Please note that the children are off on this day.

Thank you so much,
Ms.Victoria and Ms. Mariam

Sports Day

We will be celebrating Sports Day on November 1st. It will be a fun-filled day that aims to teach children about sportsmanship.
There will be teams and each team has its own color. Today I sent home a class list with the team colors listed so there is plenty of time to prepare a shirt for the day.

I also sent home blue files for children who have not been bringing their files in. Please make sure they come back to school everyday.

Thank you Parents,
Ms. Victoria and Ms. Mariam

Reading Week!

Hello Parents,

As many of you may already know, we have a new full-time assistant in the classroom, Ms. Mariam. She will be with us for the remainder of the school year. We are thrilled to have her join us and I look forward to working with her to provide the children with a lot of support in the classroom. Ms. Karen will be assisting in the KG office.

Today was the start of Reading Week. I explained to the children that our goal is to read 100 books by the end of the week. That's a lot of books! To reach our goal, the children must read some books at home. I sent home a reading log today and would love if each child could read 1-2 books a night at home this week to add to our tally. We have a thermometer posted outside our classroom that tracks the number of books we read and it will be filled in daily.

To conclude Reading Week, we will have a Dress as a Book Character day on Wednesday. The children don't have to participate (and must come in uniform) but we will have a small parade and I would not want any child feeling left out. It if preferred that the costumes are simple, homemade, and creative rather than store bought Halloween costumes. We may have a Halloween parade and those costumes can be saved for that occasion.

Here are some ideas so you can prepare:
Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Seuss (great for twins)
Cat in the Hat
Any animal from Brown Bear, Brown Bear (Yellow duck, Purple Cat, Green Frog, Blue Horse, etc. )
Little Red Riding Hood
Curious George
Disney Princesses

It does not have to be a well-known book. If your child's favorite book is about a dinosaur, he can dress as a dinosaur. It would be nice if they can bring in the book on Wednesday to show their friends.

This week is about teaching kids that reading is fun, not a chore! Let's have a great week!

-Ms. Victoria and Ms. Mariam

Our 'And' Song

The children love inviting people into our room to listen to our 'and' song. They have begged me to invite Mr. Youssef, Ms. Ashley (who teaches art next door), and Ms. Marwa to come to our class (and they all did!). You have probably heard it already from your own child but here is the class singing it together.

Week 6 Update

Hello Parents and Families,

We are up to week 6 already. Time is flying! The kids are into a routine and we are learning something new every day. I was feeling ill and was out on Tuesday but the kids were in great hands with Ms. Karen, who knows all of our routines and class rules.

It was great to have Sunday back in our schedule. If you have walked past our classroom, you may have seen the nighttime pumpkins the children created in Art. We started with learning about pumpkins. What do they look like? What do they feel like? What do they smell like? What can you do with a pumpkin? They learned pumpkins come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. They drew their own pumpkin and mixed yellow and red to paint it orange. When it dried, we made a nighttime background with chalk and black paper. We have gotten many compliments on the artwork and the children loved that we had an actual pumpkin in our classroom to observe.

In Language Arts this week, we practiced our four sight words by making flashcards and playing teacher with a friend. They were allowed to sit anywhere in the classroom with a friend and teach each other how to read! I walked around the room to listen and observe.  The children bought their flashcards home to practice during the weekend. Next week, we will be adding the word ‘see’ to our vocabulary.

Show and tell on Wednesday went great. It was brief but the children were very engaged and excited all day about it. It was a great activity to practice speaking and listening to our friends. We saw and learned about our friends’ photographs, little toys and stuffed animals. Some children forgot to bring their item. I told them not to worry; I forgot my special item too! We will do show and tell every week so they will have another opportunity to bring it in.

In Math, we are adding prepositions to our vocabulary: over, beneath, next to, between, beside, etc. We will continue to work on them next week. They were only introduced to them this week and I plan to teach them a song soon that will help them remember what each word means.

In Social Studies, we talked about problems and solutions. I gave each table a problem such as being lost, spilling juice, and fighting over a toy. Each table thought of things they could do to solve their problem and shared them with the class.

In Science, we are starting to learn about plants. We talked about different type of plants, such as trees, shrubs, and grasses. Each child drew an example of each type of plant and we will be planting our own plants very soon!

Please send your children to school with their blue files and channel books every day. I may need to write a note home and prefer to write it in the channel book. Also, please remove the papers from the files every day so that I can confirm that notices have been received. This would be greatly appreciated.

Next week is Reading Week at GP School! Every classroom will be keeping track of the number of books they read during the week. I will send home a reading log on Sunday. Please encourage your children to read a book every night.
I will keep everyone updated on our Reading Week activities on this blog. Please check it often next week!

Have a great weekend,
Ms.Victoria
