Last Day!

Tomorrow is our last day of school! :(

It is an out of uniform day for the occasion. Please have your child bring his/her backpack to school as there will be things sent home tomorrow. Also, please send any leveled reading books you may have at home with your child tomorrow. The children will be allowed to share snacks with each other but there is no need to send anything special with your child tomorrow.

We will visit class Grade 1A tomorrow to ask them questions about grade one. Today we discussed whether we felt excited or nervous about leaving KG2. After tomorrow's visit, I hope everyone will be excited about the transition as it is a big step for them!

Last Day of School

The last day of school is approaching! For the last day, I would like the whole class to be in attendance so the children can spend time with each other and celebrate an amazing year. We will take a "trip" to first grade and the children will get to talk to first graders and ask any questions about life in grade one. We will not have a dish party but the children will be allowed to share snacks that day. Also, it is an out of uniform day.

Thank you Parents for a great year!

Change of Transportation Slips

Just a reminder that you must submit a change of transportation slip in by Sunday, May 2nd, if you would like to take your child home with you after the graduation ceremony on Tuesday May 3rd. I have only received a few and would hate for there to be any disappointment on that day.

We cannot accept the slips on the day of the graduation!

Weekly Update

Please note that swimming class on May 22nd is cancelled as we will have picture day. The children will be dressed in their caps and gowns at school.

As we approach the end of the school year, there will be several updates regarding graduation and the production day so it is vital that the blog is checked on a regular basis!

All the children came back from Spring Break in great spirits. We had a fun and busy week easing back into school.

For Language Arts, our big book of the week was called Pie in the Sky. It was about making pie using cherries from a cherry tree. It provided a recipe to follow to make a pie. We followed a recipe for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in class and (most) children got to try something new!

Please be informed that Production Day is scheduled for May 30th. There will be more details to come.

Also, June 3rd will be the graduation celebration for the children. Please mark your calendars!

Food Allergies

Dear Parents,

This week’s big book has a focus on following a recipe. We will explore this tomorrow by following a “recipe” for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This is a classic lunch sandwich for children in the United States. Although no child has a reported food allergy in our class, please let me know if you have any concerns. The children will make their own sandwiches.

Thank you,
Ms. Victoria and Ms. Mariam

Weekly Update

This week in Language Arts, we added the words 'she' and 'all' to our word wall. We learned a song for each word to help us remember how to spell them. Ask your child to sing them for you! Next week, we will add the words 'he' and 'no'.

We also read the book "Zinnia's Flower Garden" which is about a girl who plants a garden and waits patiently for her plants to grow. At the end of the book, it is winter and she is planning her garden for next year. We took the opportunity to review parts of a plant and seasons.
In Math, we started Chapter 11 which focuses on addition. We are using storytelling to begin understanding the concept of addition. We will continue this Chapter next week.

In Social Studies, we continued our discussion on needs and wants. We watched a short video about it and shared some things we really want but don't need. Some examples the children came up with was a Wii, pets, and Chipsy.

Next week, we will have our trip to My Gym on Tuesday. If your child is not attending, please keep him/her at home as all KG teachers will be on the trip.

Also, next Wednesday is Egypt Day! We will show our Egyptian pride with a little lunch party featuring Egyptian food. If you would like to contribute a dish, it would be greatly appreciated!

Weekly Update

This week in Language Arts, we read a book called Leo The Late Bloomer. It was about a tiger named Leo that learned to read, write, talk, and eat neatly later than his friends. We talked about what we could do now that we were not able to do last year. They have grown so much, like Leo, in just one year!
We also added the words 'said' and 'good' to our word wall. We practiced our sight words by hopping and reading them outside. Using their bodies helps them remember the words and it's fun!
In Math, we finished Chapter 10 which focused on time, temperature, and the calendar. The concepts at this age are very general. We will review Chapter 10 on Sunday and start Chapter 11 next week. Chapter 11 and 12 are on addition and subtraction.

In Science, we continued discussing matter. We focused on solids and sorted solids by color, shape, weight, and size.

In Social Studies, we talked about the difference between what we need and what we want. In pairs, we sorted picture cards into things we need and things we want. At the end of the activity, the children saw that we want many more things than we really need.

In Character Building, Ms. Mariam discussed using good manners. In our classroom, a few examples include pushing in our chairs, asking to use the bathroom politely, and chewing with our mouths closed. Each week we will have a new focus and reinforce the message throughout the week. Next week, it will be about listening.
Yaseen reads his book 'The Bike Race' to his friends!

Weekly Update

In Language Arts this week, we added two new words to our word wall- make and play. We practiced writing, reading, and using the words in sentences in class. The children also were given new leveled readers that are a little harder since they were reading so fluently at their current level.

We read the book, "Best of Friends" several times and discussed the characters in the book. The book is about two best friends that like some of the same things and some different things.

In Math, we continued Chapter 10, which focuses on time, the calendar, and temperature. We started with learning how to read a calender- something the children are comfortable with since we use it everyday during our morning meeting. We will continue and finish Chapter 10 next week.

In Science, we started Chapter 7 which is about matter. We learned there are three types of matter- solid, liquids, and gasses. This week, we worked on sorting different types of matter into these categories.

In Character Building, Ms. Mariam read them the book "I Can be Fair'. The class discussed what being fair meant and brainstormed examples of how they could show fairness in the classroom and garden.

P.E swimming classes have begun and our first pool lesson went very well. It is helpful to send your child in their swim suits because it cuts down on changing time and they get more pool time! They also have swimming in the morning (2nd and 3rd period) so they will not be in their swim suits for very long before they go swimming. *Also, some of the swim caps that were sent with the children were too small. Please try the caps on your child to ensure they have a proper fitting cap for their lessons. ** I kept the flotation devices (noodles, etc.) in school to prevent the hassle of bringing them back and forth. Please let me know if you want me to send it home with your child.

Brief Update and Reminders!

Last week, we had fun learning some new games during Fun Day! We played Alphabet Duck, Duck, Goose, red light, green light 123, and four corners. We also practiced our sight words by playing our usual sight words games such as Alphabet Bingo. This week we will be adding two more words to our word wall: make and play.

The children will receive their new leveled reading books tomorrow. They are a little harder than their previous books but I read them their new books today and they seem to be very comfortable with the words. Please allow them to practice reading to you every night!

Please note that report cards will be distributed on Wednesday and parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday. There is no school for students on Thursday.

Also, fees for the costumes for the music production are past due. If you were planning on ordering a costume, tomorrow will be the last day I can accept the fee.

As the weather is getting warmer, the children will need to drink more water. Please send enough water for the day. It is okay to send extra bottles of water for your child. I will label the bottle and keep it in the classroom for them. Please also send everything your child needs for lunch with them such as forks, spoons, ketchup etc.

Just as a reminder, our class has swimming on Wednesday. They will need to bring everything required on the list to be able to participate. They are looking forward to this! I posted this list earlier and you can find it on the blog if you lost the handout.

Thank you Parents for your help with everything!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to the lovely mothers of KG2B! Thank you so much for coming in today. It meant a lot to the children.

I know it was a rough day for some but we have to realize that a day that is so different from their regular day, involving seeing their mom, can stir up a lot of emotions for a young child.

Thank you Moms for all of your support. Happy Mother's Day!

As a reminder, next Sunday and Monday are days off for the children. They return on Tuesday and it will be a regular school day.

Also, in the beginning of April, Monday and Tuesday P.E. classes will be replaced with swimming class on Wednesday. The children do not need to wear their P.E. uniform on Monday and Tuesday. A note was sent home today listing the items needed for swimming class. Please make sure everything is very clearly labeled! They will have a double period for this swimming class.

Have a great weekend!

Week 23 Update

This week in Language Arts, we read the book Sheep Take A Hike. It was full of rhymes and we discussed cardinal directions; north, south, east, and west. We even recreated part of the story and left a trail of clothespins as we "hiked" around the school, like the sheep did in the book with their fur.
We also added the words "go" and "for" to our word wall, which now has 24 words. Next week, we will be reviewing these words so that the children can read, spell, understand and use the words before we add more words to the word wall.
As for their leveled reading books, the children will receive a new book next week. The children will work with their books for one to two weeks at a time. It is important to let them read their books to you every night as they are practicing their reading fluency!

In Math, we continued Chapter 9: Measurement by exploring capacity and weight. We used words such as longer, taller, shorter, measure, estimate, heavier, and lighter to compare objects. Next week, we will conclude Chapter 9 by discussing area and reviewing all measurement concepts.

Next week, the children will be dismissed at 11:15. Any changes in transportation must be submitted at least 48 hours in advance.

On Thursday, March 21st, we will invite Mothers in for a special tribute in honor of Mother's Day

Week 22 Update

This week in Language Arts, the children received a new leveled reading book to practice at home. Many children have been losing the books or forgetting to bring them to school. It may be best to keep the books in school in the future. I will keep you updated.

We read the book In The Deep Blue Sea that the children loved. We practiced reading color words and identifying rhyming words. It is a very repetitive book so it was easy for the children to read along!

In Math, we started our unit on Measurement. We have been using items such as paper clips, cubes, and even shoes to ease our way into understanding how to estimate and measure height and length. *I was absent on Thursday so Lesson 7.5 has been postponed until Monday.*

In Science, we discussed the differences between the day sky and the night sky. We also talked about the time difference between New York and Egypt that the children found interesting.

Our trip to the Ceramic Cafe was very nice. It gave the children the opportunity to practice using their manners in a restaurant setting. The tiles they painted came out beautifully and will add a nice personal touch to the school entrance when they are installed. I will post pictures shortly!

Please note that Sunday, March 10th is a day off for the students.

Week 21 Update

This week in Language Arts, we added the words "this" and "find" to our word wall. We practiced reading, writing, and making sentences with these words.
We also started our reading groups! The children listen to me read the story, then take turns reading the book to the group. There are about 4 children in every group. The small size lets us discuss the book and improve our reading fluency. Please allow them to read to you every night!
This week we read the book "I Love Bugs". It helped us practice reading our sight words and discuss action words such as paddle, swoop, and buzz.
In Math, we finished up Chapter 7 and will begin Chapter 9 this week. Chapter 9 focuses on measurement. Some upcoming vocabulary includes longer, shorter, and taller. We will return to money later in the year and will be focusing on Egyptian LE, not USD.
In Science, we discussed the pattern of seasons and the order they occur in.
In Art, in preparation for our trip to the Ceramic Cafe, we practiced coming up with design ideas for our tiles. We reviewed the concept of patterns and painted our ideas.

Wednesday, March 6th, will be our trip to the Ceramic Cafe. Every child in our class will be in attendance!

Please keep in mind that the leveled reading books must be kept in the white folders. Every child was provided with one. This helps keep our books in good condition!

Thank you Parents for your help!

Week 20 Update

In Language Arts this week, we read and enjoyed the book "What is Science?" It was a great book to practice our sight words and introduce new vocabulary, such as telescope and hurricane. I also introduced a new sight word game to the kids that involves rolling a die and reading/writing the sight words. Ask your child about it!
**Also, the children will begin bring home their leveled reading books next Sunday. Please make sure they bring their white files to school on Sunday!
In Math, we started Chapter 7 which focuses on the numbers 11-30. This week, we practiced counting to twenty, writing the numbers, and estimating. We will continue this chapter next week.
In Social Studies, we discussed the Nile River and its importance in Ancient Egypt. We talked about how it provided food, transportation, and water for plants to grow.
In Science, we began discussing weather. We talked about the different activities we can do and what we should wear depending on the weather (sunny, windy, snowy, and rainy).
In Art, we made crayon resist alphabet art. The children write the letters of the alphabet in a grid using crayon and colored in each square with watercolors.

Next week, we will have our trip to the Ceramic Cafe on Monday, February 25. If your child is not attending, please keep them at home as all KG teachers will be attending the trip.

Also, Thursday, February 28th will be a half day for students. They will leave at 12:00.

Week 19 Update

This week in Language Arts, we read the book What a Beautiful Sky! We then tried to recall the story and made collages to represent and reflect each page in the book. We also reviewed beginning sounds by playing Alphabet Bingo and practiced making our own sentences.

In Math, we finished up Chapter 6 and will begin Chapter 7 on Sunday. The children enjoyed working with the line of symmetry and simple fractions. They loved being challenged with examples that were more difficult than the ones in the book

In Social Studies, we discussed what hieroglyphics were as part of our Ancient Egypt unit and the children explored some of the characters. They did an activity and had to decode a message that was written in hieroglyphics.

In Science, we discussed how we can help take care of our Earth by recycling. We brainstormed ways we could recycle in the classroom and bought our plastic bottles to the school recycle bin.

The children will hopefully begin bringing home their leveled reading books at the end of the week. Please remember that they are to come back and forth everyday with the children (book and file). Encourage your child to read to you and you can also read their book to them to model fluent reading.

Valentine Exchange Party

This Thursday, for Valentine's Day, we will have a small exchange party where the children can bring small gifts for their classmates and share them at the end of the day. The small gifts can be lollipops, stickers, small erasers, little candies, homemade cards, trinkets, etc. There are 16 children in our class and, if they choose to bring something, they should bring enough for every child in the class.

This will be a nice gesture to promote sharing and celebrate friendship!

Also, this week students are beginning to bring home white folders with sight word books in them. These are not their leveled reading books. Rather, they are simply to help the children get into the habit of bring the folders back and forth and reading at home every night. *The white folder and the book should be bought to school everyday.

Thank you Parents for your help and support!

Show and Tell Tomorrow

Tomorrow, and every Wednesday from now on, we will have show and tell. The children look forward to it every week so Ms. Mariam also wrote a reminder in all of the channel books to bring a special item from home.
Please do not allow the children to bring electronics, valuable items, or irreplaceable items. These items should only be bought to school on days we have show and tell. Otherwise, they become a distraction. Thank you Parents!

Trip to The Ceramic Cafe

Yesterday, every student bought home a permission slip to go to Il Pennelo Ceramc Cafe on Monday February 25th. If you would like your child to attend please send the permission slip and fees in as soon as possible. The deadline is next Sunday, the 17th. If you need another permission slip, just let me know via e-mail or channel book. This should be a very fun experience for the children!

Week 18 Update

In Language Arts, we added the words "are" and "now" to our word wall. We are practicing blending sounds to read new words everyday. This is something you can practice at home too! The children find it fun to try to "guess" three or four letter words. The children will hopefully begin bringing home independent leveled reading books by next week! Please take the time to have them read to you and encourage them. Reading is fun!

This week we read the book "Can you say Peace?" It is a book that teaches children that, despite differences in culture and language, we all want world peace. We discussed that we want peace in our classroom as well.

In Math, we continued Chapter 6. We did not get to math on Thursday so Lesson 6.7 will be taught on Sunday. We will continue onto symmetry and fractions this week, finishing Chapter 6. Some of the upcoming vocabulary includes; whole, half, symmetry, and equal parts.

In Science, we discussed the difference between oceans and rivers. The children had a lot of background knowledge on oceans from experience which made the discussion exciting. They knew it was salty and that it has waves (and sharks!).

In Art, we made Venetian masquerade masks for International Week! They were so excited to bring them home on Thursday. These masks are traditionally worn during Carnivale, an annual festival in Venice, Italy.

International Week was a lot of fun. The children learned how say hello and count to ten in Italian. We visited other "countries" on Thursday including Japan, China, India, Morocco, and the United States. Ask your child about it! Thank you to all the parents that sent in food for our party. It was a lovely ending to the busy week!

Next week, we will be review sight words and continue working on blending sounds to read words. We will also focus on being nice to one another as the school is focusing on our Random Acts of Kindness program.

International Week

Tomorrow the children have the option of wearing the colors of the Italian flag (green, white, and red) instead of the uniform. They may wear either. Please note that it is not a dress down day as they only have those two options.
We will have some Italian dishes (pizza and pasta) during lunch and cake in the garden for a classmate's birthday. Students do not have to pack a lunch tomorrow but may if they are picky eaters. (But who doesn't like pizza and pasta?)   :)

Show and Tell Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will be having show and tell during one of our Language Arts period. Please do not send electronic or irreplaceable items.

Also, we did not finish today's math lesson. We will finish it tomorrow. If your child has difficulty with the homework tonight, please try it again with them tomorrow.

International Week Update

Tonight for homework, the children will practice counting to ten in Italian! We made little books today and to help with pronunciation, we have been using this YouTube video:  Italian numbers 1-10

Tomorrow, their homework is to write a sentence using the word "now". There is a typo in the homework schedule.

This week we have been exploring Italy's history and culture by looking at its flag and making Venetian masks on Sunday. We have also learned the numbers 1-10 in Italian. Thursday is all about food! If anyone would like to bring in an Italian dish to share on Thursday, please let me know. Italian food consists of a lot of pasta, bread, pizza and cheese. We will eat these dishes during lunch and the children will proceed to the garden for a classmate's birthday party!

Week 17 Update

Time is flying! It is February already and we have a very fun month ahead. Next week is International Week and our class will be representing Italy! The children will learn about this country's language, food and culture. On Thursday, we will have a small party featuring Italian music and food. If you would like to bring something in, please let me know! It would be appreciated!
In Language Arts this week, we read the book "A Zebra's World". The children enjoyed relating to the book as it is about growing up and becoming independent. At the end of the book, the mommy zebra has another baby- something many of the children can relate to!
Many favorite toys and stuffed animals were shared during show and tell. I will try to have show and tell every week as the children look forward to it.
In Math, we learned a lot of new vocabulary for 3D shapes such as cylinder, sphere, cone, cube, and rectangular prism. We will continue Chapter 6 next week.
In Science, we discussed how rocks can be different colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. We looked at a few rocks and compared them.
A general reminder that jackets should be labeled with your child's name. Sometimes these names come off when washed. Please re-write them.

Thank you Parents!

Show and Tell Tomorrow

Although we usually have show and tell on Wednesdays, I forgot to remind the children yesterday so we will have show and tell tomorrow when all the children will have something to share.

Please remember that the children should not bring any electronics or irreplaceable items. There is always the possibility of it being broken or lost!

Important Notes

Today the math homework is a page from your child's math workbook, 'Show What You Know'. I have enclosed this page in your child's blue file today.

This page makes sure your child is ready to learn and understand the skills and concepts of Chapter 6.

**Please make sure you check the Arabic and Religion tab often as important notes from Ms. Shahenda are there.

** Please also make sure your child has enough water for the day. Lately, the children have been running out of water in the middle of the day.

** Today many children did not have enough food for the day. Please ensure you pack plenty of food or instruct your child what they should eat at what time. You can also label the food so I know what foods are intended for each meal.

**There was a blue jacket left behind today. It does not have a name on the label and was not claimed by any students. Please make sure all jackets are labeled with your child's name and class.

Thank you Parents!

Week 16 Update

In Language Arts, we read the book Snow several times during the week and discussed what animals do when it snows. We learned that verbs are words that tell us what something or someone does. As a class, we brainstormed verbs. Next week will will be adding the words you and what to our word wall!
In Math, we continued Chapter 5 and started to study tally charts. The children practiced reading and making their own charts. Next week, we will conclude Chapter 5 and start Chapter 6: Geometry and Fractions.

In Science, we focused on different kinds of land we find on Earth (sand, rock, and pebbles). We discussed the difference between rocks and pebbles.

In Art this week, the children decorated dolls in honor of Al Maweled Al Nabawy.

-We will be following the Week 2 menu this week.
-We will have show and tell on Wednesday.
- I will continue to send Family of the Month notices home but our classroom is always in need of the following items: tissues, wet wipes, and hand soap as we clean and wash our hands often!
-International Week is approaching (first week of February) and our class will be representing Italy!

Math Homework

For tonight's math homework, the children will make a 'Favorite Color Graph'. Since they can't ask their friends about their favorite color, it would be helpful if you could provide the data. Pick three colors and tell your child how many children like each color. I briefly went over the night's math homework so they might be able to do it on their own (and make up their own numbers).

Also, we will have another show and tell on Wednesday. The children can bring small toys, photographs and trinkets that are special to them. I will remind the children tomorrow.

Thank you Parents for your help!

Ms. Victoria

Week 15 Update

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and enjoyed the nice, warm weather.

Last week, we added two words to our word wall: with and my. We will continue to work with these words this week in Chapter 12 of Language Arts. We are also continuing practicing distinguishing the end sounds of words.

In Math, we started Chapter 5- Graphs and we will continue the chapter this week. The children are getting familiar with the new vocabulary: graph, row, column, fewer.

In Social Studies, we begun our unit on Egypt. The students painted a class poster of Egyptian symbols and landmarks that we will discuss in the following weeks.

The trip to Sitara Theatre was wonderful! The play was age appropriate and the children were constantly laughing. We discussed the story of Ali Baba before we watched the play and the children had no problem following the play. Two of the children even got to go up on stage and be characters in the story!

We are on the Week 1 Menu this week.

**Reminder: We do not have school this Thursday, January 24th in observance of Al Muled Al Nabawy.

-Ms. Victoria

Week 14 Update

In Language Arts, we reviewed Chapter 11 and began discussing end sounds. I re-read Jump into January and the children were very proud that they remembered some of the new vocabulary from the book! We have been working on beginning sounds since the beginning of the year and the children are very good with them. (Ask them, "How do you say ___ in two parts?") End sounds are more difficult to distinguish but we will practice, practice, practice!

In Math, we began Chapter 5 which is about graphing. We are beginning to work in centers, which allows me to work with children in small groups for math.

In Science, we began our unit Earth unit and discussed how Earth is made up of land, water, and air. We talked about things we find in the water and things we find on land.

*Tuesday will be Parent- Teacher Conferences. There will be no school for the children. Please sign and return the appointment slip as confirmtion so I can arrange for the day. Thank you to those who replied already!

** Monday is the last day to submit the permission slip and fees for the Sitara Theater trip! I would love all the children to attend but permission slips and fees will not be accepted after the due date.

I hope everyone had a great Winter break. Here's to a great second trimester!

Ms. Victoria

General Reminders and Upcoming Events

It was so nice to see everyone back in school today!  I hope everyone had a great break and got time to relax- parents and children alike.

Due to low attendance and the short week, we will not have formal homework this week. I will send a book home with each child to read for the night. They may change their books tomorrow if they finished reading it and want a new one. Otherwise, the books will be due on Thursday. They will receive a normal homework packet on Sunday.

On Thursday, report cards will be sent home. Parent- teacher conferences will be on Tuesday, January 15th. I have sent home appointment slips today. Please sign the slips and return them as soon as possible to confirm.

Permission slips for our trip to Sitara Theater next week were also sent home today. Please sign the form and  send the money in as soon as possible if you would like your child to attend. I have heard from other teachers that the play is lovely and the children would enjoy it.

With the weather being cold and rainy, some children were out sick. If your child is sick, it is best to keep them at home so that they can get better and avoid getting others ill.

Thank you Parents for all you do,
Ms. Victoria
